A Day On, Not A Day Off

This past Monday some of our girls gave up their day-off from school to participate in some service projects at "A Day On, Not A Day Off". Helping others is a key aspect and trait of Girl Scouts. What better way to help celebrate Martin Luther King's goal of the same message.  This year, the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona Council is focusing on reading and sharing the world of reading with others.

For a few hours our girls shared their time to help others in many different ways. A huge hit with our girls, and everyone else there, was to help paint small bookshelves. Some girls even brought a few books to donate to local home libraries and preschools.

Another hit was to help tie quilt pieces together Rag Style.  It was amazing to see how the girls worked together, helping each other out when one needed a little more paint and needed help tying quilt pieces together.

While not all of our girls participated in the "It's Your Story, Tell It" activity, a few shared their voice and opinions about the many aspects of Civil Rights. Their voices were recorded and will be published for schools and libraries in Arizona.  This particular project will be an ongoing on, so our girls that were not able to participate will have many other changes - I do hope all our girls do this and let their own voice be heard!

While our girls were able to work hard and participate in quite a few activities at this event they will be working harder still, to continue to help even more people.  At the end of March our girls will be able to help celebrate Cesar Chavez Day.

In April they will be able celebrate service itself with other girl scouts beyond their own troop. The more the merrier!! And also in April girls will receive recognition for their work.

As troop leaders, one of the main aspects of "A Season Of Service" that we are looking most forward to, each troop is being challenged to complete 100 hours of community service throughout the entire year.  As a troop we know we can do 100 hours!

2013 will definitely be a Season of Service for our Troop!

Cookie Rally

You know Cookie Season is upon us when you go to a Cookie Rally!  This year the Girl Scouts Cookie Rally was at UofA's McKale Center during the UofA Girl's Basketball Game.  Our girls loved it! Each one had so much fun learning about cookies, making swaps, and watching the game.  You couldn't ask for a better introduction to the Cookie Season.

Each girl was given a Cookie Passport, each area to be stamped as they learned more and more about cookies.  They learned how to stay safe when selling cookies door-to-door and at booths, how to create the perfect elevator speech.

And of course none of us could resist dressing up as an actual Girl Scout Cookie!!

Welcome!

Welcome to the new Girl Scout Troop 459 Blog.  We are a brand new Multi-Level troop (established in August 2012) based in Tucson, AZ. We are made up of Daisies, Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes.  While we have not been around long already we have been a very busy troop.

In September we participated in Pinwheels for Peace for International Day of Peace.  In October we took our first Troop Camping Trip to Mt. Lemmon, during which each girl completed her Outdoors Badge.  During this time we were also one of the first troops to sell Cookie Snack Bars. We closed the 2012 year with our first Investiture, officially welcoming every girl into Girl Scouts while presenting them with their earned Badges and Patches

Cookie Season is right around the corner and we are ready for it!
